ELA & IELCE

ELA & IELCE

Adult English Language Acquisition (ELA) classes provide English language instruction in speaking, listening, reading, and writing for adults ages 16 and up with limited English proficiency. In Illinois, these classes were formerly called English as a Second Language (ESL). They are also commonly known as ESOL classes (English for Speakers of Other Languages).

For over four decades, the Adult Learning Resource Center (ALRC) has served as the primary source of support for instructors and program administrators in Illinois that provide adult English Language Acquisition (ELA) and Integrated English Literacy and Civics Education (IELCE) programming. The ALRC provides professional development opportunities and technical assistance that reflect and respond to current issues and trends in ELA.
